You Heard It Here First
I was aimlessly surfing the net last night when I decided to look for stuff about one of my favourite comix of all time- Idiotland.
I first got into it in the early nineties. It was one of the funniest comic books I had ever set eyes on and I distinctly remember being repeatedly reduced to tears with laughter. Eventually I got my hands on what I thought were all four issues… until a couple of years ago when I went into a comic shop in Amsterdam and did what I always do when I go into a new comic shop- searched for copies of Idiotland, and to amazement I found that they had two copies- but not only that, they were issues #5 and #6! I couldn’t believe it. I didn’t even know that they existed.
In the intervening eight years or so since last having a new issue to almost crap myself laughing at, Idiotland had become a minor obsession. At any opportunity, I would advise, request and then force friends to read it and I would always get really confused and cheesed off if they didn’t think it was the funniest thing they had ever seen.
And so here I was surfing for Idiotland stuff… I never knew anything about it’s creators Doug Allen and Gary Leib apart from that they were the guys who made Idiotland. So I was pretty happy when I found their sites. So happy in fact that I emailed them and said Hello, I think Idiotland is one of the funniest things that exist. I used to be obsessed by it. Thanks for making it. What are you up to these days?

I work on animation and films mostly. Sadly comics pays nothing and I have a wife and child in NYC. I love doing comix however, and another issue of idiotland is slowly coming together, by Doug and myself and guest artists (Kaz, Charles Burns and Dan Clowes). Not sure when that will be done, but stay tuned and thanks for the kind words.
